(press association telegram.) ELTHAM, July S. A fire broko out at 0 o'clock yesterday morning in a shop occupied by .Mrs Adams, fruiterer, in High street? Tlio fls-mos wero not discovered till they burst through tho wi*;do«s. A northerly gale \v«s raging, and other wooden structures to the norili quickly caught. Iho brigade was almost lu-lploss, owing to tho terrific heat, and it seemed that tho firo could not bo stopped before it had consumed tlio Allien.-.'un*. There was also « danger of Davidson's diapory shop ot the corner of Bridge and High streets, ond Potts's Hotel on tho opposite corner going. Rain minimised tho risk ol flying sparks. A lull enabled the brigade to get .1 hoso behind Dixon's blat-Ksinith's j,hop, and tho flames wero stopped at Walker's, saddlers. Tho following premises -vrrro destroyed :-Mrs J). Adams, fruiterer: Mrs lionnr-j-,y, lolly shop- .Misses Cowens ami Cave, dressmakers, 011 top of Crcsswell's general store; the promises of .Mr Parker, dentist, on top of tho premises of .Miss liobb, draper; Mrs Levis, fruiterer; H. G. Pnvne jeweller: Wolker. saddler; and Dixon, blacksmith (partially.). 'Die total loss is estimated at £0000. Oi this, £3000 is insured, £77") being in the Royal. Tho origin of tho lire is unknown. A night watchman inspected the building a quarter of an hour before the outbreak. Tho insurances aro ns follows:— Mr W. Hennessy, £ir>o in the Commercial Union on stock; G. P. Wake, £700 on building in the Alliance; L. T. Cresswell. £-100 in tlie Northern, nnd £2"0 in the Liverpool and London and Globe on stock; W. Grogan. £1!>0 on furniture in tho Hoyal; Misses Itobb, £300 in tho Hoyal on stock; Mrs L"wis. £lf)0 in tho Royal on stock; Mr H. Stannrrß, £200 in the Phrenix on tho buildings. His other insurances aro unknown. IT. G. Pavnp, £100 on stork in tbe Alliance, and £"0 on furniture in tho Now Zroland : J. Walker. C.jO on stork in the Northorn : J. Dixon, £100 on ftcck, and £100 on tho buildings in tho Hoyal.
