AMONG THE PICTURES.

THIRD NOTICE. Some of the most creditable and characteristic work in the Canterbury Art (Society's Exhibition remains for our third, and final notice. Miss M. 0. Scoddarts "Gipsy Camp" (No. 189) is a very interesting exaniplo of her work. It is tine in touo and harmonious in colour. She does not please us so well in "TJie Gondola Hospital, Venice*' (No. 201), in which the eliect is thin, and there seems to be a lack of conviction. "The Harbour, St. Ives" (No. 205), by the same artist, is an interesting study in tone, and sho also contributes a charming little picture, full of atmosphere, entitled "At the Gates ol Rome" (So. 2-7). Alias Hodgkins has evidently changed her stylo of painting, the examples she now shows being marked by very broad and dasliing effects, 'ihe Ora_g. Sail' UNo. U-0) i_ perhaps tho b_t oi Uioin. "Low Hue, Westminster" (iNo. 314), is a very tichcate little skeUih by Air O. Morton. The subject is handled with much toeling. Several other little pictures shown by the same artist are quite gems in their way, all of them allowing a tine appreciation _of colour. "Lingering Gleams" (iNo. -37), by iiiiss Nosworthy, is quito the best picture wo have seen from the brush of this artist. Passing a picture by Mr C. N \Vorsley, which leally should not have been exhibited, as it is far from worthy of an artist who can produce such work as "Tho Rocky .Bastions of the' Shore" (No. 263), our attention is claimed by a very fresh little sketch by E. liartley, "Whaling Station, Kaikoura" (No. 2-16). Mr S. L. Thompson's portrait of a pretty little_ girl (No. 108) is a favourite with visitors. The picture is a harmony in gold and green, and is full of expression. Tho same artist's "F"iening.Giow, Staithes" (No. 71) is notable for the happy realism of tho sunshine on the tiled roofs and the cliffs; while his "Brittany Beggar Girl" (No. 125) and "Sunny Hours" are also full of the, effect of sunlight, and are strong and vigorous pictures. Delightful in its cool grey tones is Aliss Grace Joel's interesting littlo study, "The Culprit" (No. 137). The pose of the boy is extremely expressive. "The Cave" (No. 84), by; Mr 0. E. Bickerton, is very harmonious in ' colour und freshly handled. D. Rodger shows in his picture ."A Foggy Evening" (No. 128) a good deal of feeling for atmosphere. There is good brushwork in Mr W. H. Montgomery's "Portrait" (No. 152), nnd though the drawing of the face is rather faulty, it is altogether a very pretty and interesting study. Some good examples of pencil drawings of architectural sub-, jects are shown by Mr J. F. Mannings (Nos. 297, 298, 319). Mr Cecil WooiF* sketch of "R.M.S. Runic in Dock" (No. 316) is splendidly, drawn. • One of, the most ndmired pieces of work in' the whole Exhibition is the marble bust, "A Daughter of Evo," by Mr C. Kidson. It is a charming representation of a littlo girl—tho sculptor's daughter, wo understand. The softness of the child-face is beautifully rendered, and the whole effect is full of feeling and expression. The Society is to be congratulated on being enabled, through the generosity of the Hon. E. C. J. Sttvens, to retain this valuable bust as a permanent feature of the gallery. Pictures by the following ere also exhibited:—Air James Balfour, Alias K. Bishop, Aliss At. A.
