MR WI PERE.
Mr Wiremu Pere is an influential chief of the Ngatiporou, the principal tribe on the Eaot Coast. During the Haiihau rebellion in tbe sixties he took part with ths friendJy natives against Te Kooti's people. Mr Pere was elected in 1894 to represent the eastern Maori eJectorate, a position from which he was ousted at the following general election in 1887 by the Hon. James Carroll. In 1894, Mr Carroll stood for the European seat, and Mr Pere was again elected to represent the eastern Maori seat. He was again dapoaed at the last general election by Mr A. T. Ngata. Mr Peri has considerable influence amongst the Maoris. He was for some years a trusteo with Mr Carroll of tha East Coast Native Trust Lands. The Board was dissolved last year.
