The annual 'breaking-up social in connection with the Christchurch Shorthand and Commercial School took place in the Alexandra Hail last night, and w„ largely attended by the pupils of the school. The evening opened with a concert programme, most of tho items of which were contributed by the school pupils. A pianofore duet was played by Misaes N. and L. Dwver. and pianoforte solos by Mian D. English, Miss E. McCarthy, and Mr G. Arcbey. Songs were contributed by Miss G. Wood. Mr F. Postgate, Messrs R. Cresswell and L. Cunningham*. Miss C. Redmmne. and Mr W. Marks. Miss C. The annual renoTt was then read, and the prizes and certificates presented by Mr 'G. Laurenson, M.H.R* The report stated that the number of students on thje roll was considerably larger than that far any preocding year, while the office, appointments secured by pupils of the school during the pa*t twelve months again showed a large increase over any corresponding previous period; in fact, the great difficulty had been to prepare student* fast enough to moet the keen demand that had existed. Students had been very successful at the various examinations held during the year. For the fourth year in succession a member of the school had succeeded in winning the pold medal annually presented by the Christchurch Shorthand Writers' Association, for the highpst speed certificate granted during the year by Sir Isaac Pitman and Sons as a result of the examinations held by the Association. The gold medal for 1906 had been won by Miss Ethel Idiens, with a speed certificate for .ICO words per minute. Another record established was that of Mr H. Worrall. who, after twelve months' Btudy, was successful in passing the Institute of Accountante' examination. Being only eighteen years of age. he is the youngest student to achieve this sucocss. The results of the s*horthacd speed examinations held durinsr the year showed that out of a total of fifty-one first-class Pitman spesd certificates granted, students of this school succeeded in obtaining all but ten. Eightynine shorthand speed and theory certificates had been granted by Sir Israac Pitman and Sons as a result of the year's work, as asainst sixty-eight for the previous year, and there were "still the examination papers of some fifty candidates, the results of which had not yet been received. The annual examination of students had been conducted by outside examir<?rs, all of whom spoke very hishlv of the quality of the work done and the examination papers handed in by stu dents.
