EXPERIMENTAL STATIONS.
PROPOSALS BY THE GOVERNMENT.
(SPECIAL TO " THE TRESS.") WELLINGTON, Scptombor 18. In the course of his speech at Shannon latt night, the Minister of Agriculture stated that the Government intended to go into the whole question of experimental stations, and arrange them according to some proper classification. They appeared to havo been established with no definite idea in view in regai_ to their site, tho objects they were to accomplish, or the treatment that .should bo meted out to them. As a result they wore sprinkled over the Si-ato with no sufficient regard to the _>.:uticui_r want of tlie locality. The stations would b? sorted out and those that were to remain would bo experimental stations in the be_t sense of tho word. One or two of tlto stations had now reached a fairly high standard and good results might be expected from them. Where good work could be shown they would open the doors of the _ stations to the young men of the State -Ijd offer facilities to the sons of fanners. Those who wanted to bo farmers, whether they wero tho sons of farmom or came from tho towns, won l ' bo received as cadets and given i f .ction. An immense amount of goou .oiild l>o ,!one by educating farmers in tho best methods of cultivation. Lincoln College might have done good work in the pat but unfortunately its operations had been narrowed down by tho conditions under which it was forced to carry on. They hoped to open tho stations tp oviry lad who desired to loam, but tho moment they were no longer desirous of learning they could return to their homes.
