Mr E. L. Lees (Wellington), Mr J. Moore Jones (Dunedin), Mr W. Waite (Dunedin), Mr and Mrs Burrows (Dunedin), Mr T. J. Mahoney, Mr C. H. Armstrong, and Mrs John Marshall (Dunedin) arrived in town yesterday. The Hon. C. Louisson, M.L.C., (fentain Downie, Dr. Maitland, and Mr T. N. Horsley left for Wellington by tho Zealandia last night. Mr H. White and Mr E. V. Palmer left for Gisborne by tho Zealandia last evening. Captain Meikleham and Mr J. W. Twentyman left for Auckland by the Zealandia yesterday. Mr and Mrs Walker, who aro leaving the Invell district, wero presented by tho residents at a social gathering on Monday with a purse of sovereigns. Our London correspondent writes, under date of July 27th:—Information has reached mc that Mr Samuel Tinsley, chess editor of "Tho Times," will this week begin the publication in the chess column of that paper of a series of articles on New Zealand chess problem composers, illustrated by selections of their problems. There will bo twelve articles, and they will be published weekly. The 'articles and problems aro compiled from material furnished by Mr S. S. Blackburne, of Christchurch, and tho articles are Written by Mr Alain C. White, a well known American chess problemist, in continuation of other international sketches of dices problem composers, which he has been contributing to "The Times" during tho past year or two. Mr F. Wilding and his son, Mr A. F. Wilding (Christchurch) have been playing tennis at tho Shrewsbury Tournament. Playing together, father and eon won tho Gentlemen's Doubles Handicap; tho latter won the Gentlemen's Singles Challenge Cup, defeating tho holder (Mr E. R. Allen) in tho final; and in association with Miss Pinckney ho ran through tho Mixed Doubles Handicap, antT divided the J>rizo with Mr H. Cliiswell and Mrs lawkcr, time preventing tho arrival of a definite issue.

Mr and Mrs H. A. Atkinson (Christchurch), who came Home, via Sydney, in the s.s. Omrah, havo been visiting friends in Manchester and other parts of England, and now they intend to settle down in Manchester for some time, having previously resided there. Mr Thomis R. Proctor (Christchurch) hfii come to the Mother Country in order to further his experience in his pofewion as an electrical engineer. Mr Proctor is now living in Manchester, and lias already started work with the British Westingbouse Company. The length of Mr Proctor's stay vs. of course, uncertain; it will probably extend over threo or four years.

Among the successful New Zealanders at the recent medical examinations in connection with the University of Edinburgh were W. Bartholin Somers (of Christchurch) who f-'cured firstclass- honours in practical pathology and diseases of the skin, and secondclass honours in diseases of the eye. Mr Somers was prizeman in diseases of tho skin.
