SPEECHES AT A SYDNEY GATHERING.

There was o brilliant gathering, including Lord Northcote, Admiral Sir H. Rawson, and Admiral Sir AY. Hawkes. j Lord Northccte said he was convinced ! that neither Great Britain nor Japan would have contracted the alliance if she had not honestly and sincerely believed in forni- ! ing such an alliance. They were j giving the world a strict, guaiaiitee ot I future- peace and cjiumeicial dovelop--1 ment. He trusted that thoy had united in the whito eusigu of Great Britain, and the banner of tho Rising Sun of | Japan, an alliance tliat would prove in- ! distoiubie. j Mr Geo. R*id, submitting the toast 'of Admiral Slnmamura, paid a triouto : to Japan's achievements. Admiral Shimamuio, in replying, said ho hoped the alliance wotdd be renewed agami and again, not for aggressive purpose., but as a safeguard of peace.
