The Friendly Societies' Conference/ spent a considerable time discussing Mr Loasby's motion, providing that the Act should be amonded so that no society could be registered unless it was certified tliat the table of contributions provided was *adequate -for the benefits offered. During the debate a delegate said that in one district, out of seven lodges, four wero nnfinanckn. In [ another, seven out of ten were unfinanciul, in another there were three lodges, all imfinajicial; while in another, seventeen out of twenty-one were unfinanoial. Tlie motion was o&rried by 3-1 votes to 13. It was resolved that no socioty be | allowed to carry on business without having an adequate soale of contributions, commensurate with the benefits proposed and approved by a competent actuary, which scale of contributions shall not disturb tlie contributions of existing members, but shall be brought into existence on a stated date, and shall apply to all those joining aiter thkt date. It was decided that tho Act be amended by extending the power of nomination to teums of not more than £100, instead of not more than £50, and by adding Friendly Societies' dispensaries to the provident institutions to which societies may subscribe under sub-section 12 of section 13. a\ A motion was can-itd giving small lodges power to send balances to their district authorities in order to get the advantage of the joint investment. The Conference resolved that on the dissolution of a branch of a registered Friendly Society, all moneys and properties "shall bo handed over to the central body after olaims and debts havo been paid.
