TEPID SHIMMING BATH. TO TUE EDITOB OF 'THE i'RESS." .Sir, —1 feel it incumbent on my part to reply to "Natator's" letter, "which appeared in last Monday's i-isue, oil the above subject. Firstly, the members of the City Council received a deputation four weeks ago, representing swimmers, and tlio rc-nlt is that a committee luis been appointed to go thoroughly into tin; matter, with myself as a member of iho committee. Two meetings have been held, and as the report to be pre-.•-onted to the Council at its next meeting is sub judice, 1 mii.-,t at this juncture refrain from making our delil/eration.s public. Secondly, a.s to '"Natator's" remark, that th« public would liko to know what the Swimming Association aro doing in the matter. 1 would re■>poctfully suite that the swimmers have been agitating since 18!i7, when a publio meeting was held in the Chamber of Commerce, «t which Mr K. AY. Roper proposed that steps should be taken at once to supply the long-felt want of a tepid bath for Christchurch. Mr C. Louisson seconded the wot ion, and supported the question at *ome length, nnd Cits. Samuels and Woods also ,-poko in favour of a tepid bath. A strong committee was set up, but nothing came of it. In 100-1 n deputation again waited on tho Council, and Mr. 11. W. Roper again acted as ipokesman, and presented a. petition, signed by one thousand residents in Christ church. The Council gave every attention to the deputation, but as tho question waa ono of finance, and a fresh election was coming on, tho bath question was relegated for further consideration. In 190-3 a, deputation from the swimmers ngnin interviewed the Council, and .a sub-com-mittee was appointed, of which Cr. Samuels waa chairman, wind I was elected to ]<epresent the Canterbury Centre. Plans wero prepared by the City Surveyor, but the estimated was l>cyond the Council's means, and the matter was left in abeyance. Tho chance cii procuring ft tepid bath for Christchurch is now within lmwurable distance of being nn accomplished fact. «.s the committee have given great attention to the project.—Yours, etc.,

WALTER JOHNSON. Hon. See. Cuitorhiiiv Centre, N.Z.A.S.A/
