ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT?.

The official closing of the past cricket season took placo in the Chamber of Commerce Hall ou Saturday night, when the aunual smoke canoert was held, under the auspices of the Canterbury Cricket Association, and the cujk and trophies won as the result; of the 6ea6oiiß play were presented. In that connection he would like to see an universal half-holiday—(applause) —for that would do away wibii any distinctions that might ex.st between Thursday and &atuixiay cricket. Mr Carter, in responding, said that district cricket was fctill on us trial, and a few seasons would have to pass before the scheme could ba thoroughly tested.

Air C. M. Gray, M.H.R., who pro-, posed "The Winners of the Competitions," referred, to the scarcity of > grounds for the playing of matches. I'hero were two parKis—Linwood and St. Albans—which should be available for cricket, and ho believed w> at tiie City Council would prepare grounds on these parks if the clube would be willing to use tho grounds, and pay a reasonable rent.

The trophies were then presented as follows:—The Petersen Shield, West Christchurch (eaplain, Mr J. t>. Lawrence) ; Senior Cup, West Christchurch ; Junior Cup, Riccarton (captain, Mr J. C Clarkson); President's Cup, Riccarton (captain, Mr O. Caygill); Vice-Pre-sidents' Cup, West Christchnxch (captain, Mr Young). Mr E. Fox's bat for the highest poorer in the MelbouraeCanlerbury match liad been won by Mr • K. M. Ollivier, and the hall for tho most .successful bowler in the Melbourne v Canterbury Colts match by Mr Patrick, who secured five wickets for 17 runs.

Mr R. Vincent, who proposed "Kindred. Sports," said that the New Zealand Rugby Union might very well make a grant of, Bay, £50U towards the expenses of arranging the proposed Australian, and English toet match, to be played in Christchurch during Exhibition time.

Messrs E. Nordon, E. T, Aschman and 11. W. Barry responded to the toast. x
