ESTIMATE OF THE COST OF VESSELS.
(Received May 21st, 1.21 a.m.) MELBOURNE. May 20. As a result of enquiries in London, Mr Coghlan luie informed the Fedoml .Mail Services Commission that the estimated cost of a steamer of tlie type of the Mongolia or the Macedonia, provide*] with facilities for carrying perishable, products, would range from £335,000 for a sixteen-knot vessel, to £465,000 for a twenty-knot vessel, while the additional ccht, if fit led with turbine machinery, would range from £2000 to £5000, according to speed. Tho co.it of v. first-clase intermediate steamer, used mainly for cargo end perishable goods would range from £282,000 for a fourteen-knot boat to £311,000 for a sixteen-knot boat. The information is connected with the proposal to establish a Commonwealth lino of steamers.
