Mr J. Daly, an ex-mayor of Kaiapoi, with his- wife and family of six children, and Mrs Pope, recently left for San Francisco. Letters received last mail stated they were going on to Denver, and it is expected they would have reached that town before the earthquake happened. Mr Cockcrcft, th© manager of the Oceanic -Steamship Company in San Francisco, is very well known in New Zealand, having visited the colony * few years ago.
