PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT ON THE PRESENT EVILS.

At the opening of a public building in Washington, President Roosevelt in his speech dwelt on the necessity for the sternest war against (the grave evils besetting the body politic. An epidemic of indiscriminate assaults on the _ characters of even decent pub.ic men had seared the public conscience. This was the worst sign of a great unrest. In dealing with social, political, and industrial problems, he advocated a progressive tax on the transfer of enormous fortunes, preventing any individual from inheriting beyond a.certain amount. He also advocated the national supervision of inter-State Corporations, in order to prevent over-capitalisation. The nation must strive to secure broader economic opportunities for all. (Received April 16th, 9 p.m.) NEW YORK, April 16. President Roosevelt is accused in some quarters of advocating advanced Socialism.
