TREE-PLANTING ON THE CASHMERE HILLS.

A meeting of the committee which has in hand the work of planting trees on Arbor Day on the Cashmere hills by school children, wan held on Thursday evening. Mr J. R. Brant presided, ana there was a good attendance. Mr Ell, M.H.R., said that last year he had made application to the Government'that the chief forester should furI nish some trees for the work. They, however, did not come to hand until too late. He now moved—"That the secretary write to the chief forester for a list of native trees from 3 to 5 feet high, and some introduced trees suitable for hill planting." Mr Hart seconded the motion. Dr. Russell thought the size mentioned by Mr Ell for the trees was too small. He thought they should get aa largo trees as possible. Mr Ell said that native trees of higher ' than sft could not bo planted, as tfaey ; would not grow; English trees up to ■ 6ft or 7ft could be put in and would do well. The motion was agreed to. It was Tesolved that the committee visit the hille on Thursday, 26th inst., j and select sites for the planting. I The question of the concert to be held in aid of the funds was discussed, and !it was resolv<yl to hold it on the evening of the 24th May. ; On tho motion of Mr Ell, it was decided to write to the Selwyn Count? Council and the Heathcote and Halswell i Read Boards, asking them to contribute ! towards the fund for planting. It waa pointed out that the local bodies had power to grant a subsidy if they felt inclined to do «>. as the work was being done on public property. j Mr Wilkinson reported that the pines, i totaras. beeches and bluegums planted last year were doing well. It was resolved to communicate with tho owners of property adjacent to the planting, asking them to take measures to prevent grass fires spreading near the trees.
