THE NOVEMBER SHOW.

ADDITIONAL MEDALS AND

PRIZES

A meeting of the General Committee of the A. and P. Association was held yesterday afternoon. Present—Mr D. D. Macfarlane {chairman), Sir George Clifford, Dr. Levinge, Messrs J. Henferson.'E. G. Staveley, H. P. MurrayAynsley, J. D. Hall, H. Overton, C. H. Ensor, C. P. Hugonin, G. Rhodes, G. W. Thomas, W. Hayward, junr., T. W. Adams. J. F. Wachsmann, A. Chamberlain, J. Rennie, F*/ Waymouth, G. Jameson, W. Lowrie, M. Murphy, G. Gould, T.D. Boag, J. F. Buchanan, F. Lance.. J. MoArthur, J. Stevenson, and J. Deans. In response to ft letter from the Labour Department, Mr H. Overton was nominated as representative on th«» recently constituted Agricultural Implement Enquiry Board. Accounts totalling £160 Is 9d weTe passed for payment. In connection with the next Show, the Sheep Committee recommended that ohampion medals valued at £5 6>, and ; cash prize of £2, be offered for cbam- I pion Tarns in strong combing merinos, fine combing merinos, English Leicester, Border Leicester, Lincoln, Romney, Southdown, Shropshire, and Corfledale end halfbreds (competing together), and that champion medale valued at £o os, and cash prize of £1, bo offered for champion ewe in. the above sections; that two new classes be inserted in merino, fine: - and etvong combing, and Shropshire, for ram under 20 monthe and ram over 20 months, first prize £5, eeoond £2, the regulation as ta shearing not to apply to the new ckasee, and rams entered in the classes not to be eligible j for championship; that in the fat sheep section, classes 117, 118, 121 and 122 (wethers and !lambs suitable for the frozen meat trade), the prizes be increased to, first £5, second £2, third £1; that c. circular inviting donations to tho increase of the prize fund be sent to owners of 1000 sheep and over, and to all breeders of purebred sheep in Canterbury; and that application be mode to the Government to carry exhibits to the Show free. The recommendations were adopted on the motion of Sir George Clifford. The Cattle Committee recommended that some improvement be made in the shelter for cattle on the-eastern side of the Show ground, and that it be c recommendation to the Ground Committee to have the alley-way between the stalls formed and metalled;/that the Royal Agricultural Association of Victoria bo tasked to nominate a. judge of Shorthorn and Ayrshire cattle, such judges not jx> have judged in New Zealand previously; that the prizes in c'asses 124, 125 and 126 (Shorthorn bulls) be increased to, first £5, second £2 10s. and that the prizes in classes 129, 130 and 131 (Shorthorn cows) be increased to, first £4, second £2; that the prizes in classes 133, 134 and 135 ! (progeny classes of Shorthorn) bo increased to, first £5, second £2 10s; that the prize in class 130 (Shorthorn milking cow) be increased, first £o, second £2 10s; that in the Hereford and Polled Angus sections the prizes for bull and cow of any age bo, first £5, i second £2 10s, and that two classes bo ! added to these sections for yearling bull and yearling heifer, first prize £4, second £2; that in the Jersey section the prizes for bull and cow of any age be, first £5. second £2 10s; that in the Ayrshire section the prizes be, first £6, second £2 10s in classes 100, 158, 162, and first £3, second £1 10s, in classes 156, 157. 159, IGO, 161 and 163; and that a class bo inserted for two-yoaT-old Ayrshire heifer in milk, first prize £3, second £1 10s. The committee could not see its way to recommend that free hay and mangels be supplied to exhibitors, but recommended that tenders be called for the supply of straw, hay, and green feed, at a reasonable cost. Rβ protection of stalled cattle from possible stray beaets, the committee recommended that an extra night watchman be employed to take charge of the cattle, whose first duty should be to ratisfy himself that every bull was securely tied. In reply to a question, the secretary said that the total increase in medals and prizes in the different classes amounted to £390.

Mr Murphy referred to the milking competition, from which no benefit had ever been derived. It would be advisable to eliminate the competition, as apart from the fact that it had not proved useful, he understood that during Exhibition time the Agricultural Department intended to make exhaustive milk tests, which would prove of value.

On the motion of Mr Oyerton, seconded by Mr M. Murphy, it was resolved to eliminate the milking competition in connection with the next show.

The committee'e report was then adopted, on the motion of Dr. Leringe. The Horee Committee recommended additions to prizes in various sections, and that the height of ponies in

Classes 221, 223, and 233 be raised from 14.1 to 14.2; that two new classes be added for boy and girl rider respectively under 12 years, firet prize £2, second £1; that a ladies' driving competition be added, firet prize £3, second £1 10s; that the class for dry mare (draught), not exceeding 15 J hands, bo struck out.

Tho report was adopted. The Pig Committee recommended that it be a recommendation to the Ground Committee that tho pig pens *oe floored; that a champion medal, valued at 5 guineas, be effered for the champion Berkshire boar, and champion incdale, valued at 2 guineas, be offered for champion Berkshire cow and Yorkshire bear and cow; that two classes be introduced for large black Devon pigs, first prizo £2, second £1; that the weight of bacon pigs be reduced form 2801b to 2iolb.

Tho report was adopted. Tho Dairy Produce and New Zealand Manufactures Committee reported as follower—Regarding the. awarding of a second prizo to tho Central Dairy Company's exhibit at tho last Show, this exhibit being tho only cniry in tho claa>, the committee had been in communication with Mr KinselLa, who acted as judge in this section. Mr Kinsella wrote as follows:—"I explained to seme of your directors at tho timo of tho Show that tho exhibit of creamery bnttor was very Rira'l, and that it was curfomary in other countries to award only a second prize when there was no competition, and whore several Large prizes wore offered as an inducement. I hare much pleasure in stating that the butter was of hrstclafcs quality, and no person. would be better pleased than myself to, see your Association giro the abovo company a first. prize. This, of course, rorts with your committee." Tho committee further recommended tho following increases in prizes (the figures for last year being given, in parentheses): —Factory butter £10, £5, £2 10s (£2 and £1); farmers' cheese, £7, £3 10* (£2 and £1); factory cheese, £10, £o and £2 10s (£o and £2 10s); hen eggs, £1 and 10s (os and 2s 6d); duck eggs, £1 and 10s (os and 2e 6d); bread, £3, £2 and £1 (£2, £1 and 10s); scones. £1, 10s and 5s (10s and os); farmers' ham and bacon, smoked <and unsmoked, £3, 30s and 15s (30s, los and 10s); farmers' clover, red and white, £4 and £2 (£2 and £1); collection of seeds, £10, £5 and £2 10s (£3 and £2); in classes 298, 305 and 339, where thoro were lees than five entries, the first prize to be £5 and second £2 10s. The committee recommended that classes 300, 302, 304, 308, 310. 314 and 315, dairy produce sections; classes 326. 327, 328 and 330, preserved moats sections; and classes 331, 332, 333, 334 and 335, eeeds, bo deleted, and that the following now claeses bo added:—Table butter, not less than 101b, made upon farms not exceeding 200 ncres, first prize £2, second prize £1; six whole meal Boones, first prize £1, second 10e, and two third prizes of 5s each. The report was adopted. Tho Implement Committee made the following recommendations:—Thati an extra gold medal be awarded in the carriage section, making 2 gold and 2 eilver medals for competition; that an extra gold medal be awarded in the colonial-made implement Boction, making 3 gold nnd 4 silver medals for competition; that it be an instruction to ■judges m awarding medals in imported implement section to award medals only to implements which, show special merit in improvements to meet the special requirements of New Zealand. The report was adopted. Messrs G. Rhodes, H. Overton and R. E. MoDougall were added to the Ground Committee, and Mr Bcag was appointed to the Cattle Committee. On the motion of the chairman, a rote of thanks was accorded the New Zealand Shipping Company for its kmdnesa in bringing out the'recent shipment of humble bees- free of chaTge. Messrs W. E. Sparks and C. S. Forbes were elected members of tho Association.
