MUNICIPAL MILK DEPOTS.
— V VIEWS OF AN AUCKLAND AUTHORITY. lerxciAL to "ths fke.«s.") AUCKLAND March 24. Apropos of the movement in Chrietchurch for the establishment of a Municipal Milk Depot, Mr Busck, who has repeatedly brought the importance of an efficient milk inspection in Auckland under the notice or the City Council, in the course of an interview with a '' Herald " reporter, stated that whilst an unproved system of milk inspection ; and distribution was'most deeiraole, he | did not think that the most satisfactory remedy was to be found in the establishment of municipal depots. He con- ' eidered that the supply of a town of the eize of Auckland would be too huge 1 a concern for the Council to take in hand, and that if private enterprise ! could be persuaded to take the matter ; up. it coifid be much tnore efficiently carried \>ut. He knew of no municipalities that had undertaken such a large scheme. In several towns in England Municipal Milk Depote had certainly been established, but these were email depots intended only for the supply of pure milk for the iwe of infants, the objects being to reduce the rate of infantile mortality, which had grown to alarming proportions, owing, in a great measure, it was considered, to impure milk. The first step that should be taken by the City Council in Auckland, he said, was the framing of strict regulations. As an instance of the efficient system of inspection in force in Denmark, Mr Busck s native country, he eaid that the Copenhagen Milk Supply Company employed no less than seven veterinary surgeons, and every cow from which tnilk wae, drawn for the supply wae examined once a fortnight.
