WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION.

Mrs Colo presided at- the district convention of tho Women's Christian Temperance Union last week. 1 here was a areo attendance of Chnstcburch members, and delegates were present trem the following auxiliary —Ashburton, Timaru, Lyttelton, \Va>mate, Willowby, Kaiapoi, Rangiora, Woodend, and Walk&n.. Mrs We,> S read a paper on the election of Board.* of control of charitable institutions. A resolution was adopted urging, the establishment, for all public institutions for the care ,of men, women and children, cf populailv elected Boards of Control, composed of men and women. The Convention also agreed that separate homes should bo established for men and women who are sexually irresponsible, whero they could be detained and cared for, mentally and physically. Ihe motion suggested that such homes should be in the country, where openair occupations might render the institution- praotically self-supporting, and be conducive to a healthy and happy existence for the inmates. It was decided to ask the Premier to introduce legislation during tbe coming session to give effect to the above resolutions. It waa further agreed—'•That this Convention accords to Mr Bishop, S.M., a most hearty voie<af thanks and its deep appreciation of his educative and uplifting report in connection with the recent Waft-ham Enquiry. The Convention strongly hopes that his deliverances on this question will have the result of helping to gain for the community Boards of Control of all public institutions, and the election of the same by a popular vote of men bud women." During the afternoon session Mrs McKee read a paper on "Social Purity," and, after discussion, the following resolution was passed—"'That this Convention wishes to impress upon parents their responsibility in the matter of purity, and urges them to such

a' study of physiological laws as shall enable them to wisely impart needful instruction to,their children."' A paper by Mrs, Dohrmann on ''Anti-gambling," •• was read by Mas Roberts, and after a full discussion the. following resolution was ado* jd—"That this Convention deplores the fact that gambling is increasing, and that tho totalisator has done much to foster the gambling evil in this colony. It therefore recommends tho Unions to call upon the Government to take steps to abolish the totalisator.-'' A motion was also passed expressing thanks for the No-license vote at the. recent, election. , The evening session was opened by a paper by Miss Roberts on "Organisa- j tion." A resolution was carried—"That •- on the first Wednesday of. September- in every year a provincial convention of delegates. from all Canterbury Unions should take place to consider and decide upon the special reforms to bo worked for by all Unions in the province, such delegates to consider and recommend the best means and methods to be adopted." Encouraging reports from other Unions were given by the different i delegates. ■
