A TERRIFIC HURRICANE. TAHITI DEVASTATED. TEN THOUSAND LIVES LOST. ENORMOUS DAMAGE. ( United Press Association—By iElectrio Telegraph—Copyright. (Received March sth, 9.50 p.m.) NEW YORK, March 5. The steamer Mariposa, which has arrived at San Francisco, reports that on the night of February 7th a terrifio hurricane devastated the island of Tahiti and the Paumotu group. Ten thousand people are reported to have been drowned, while the damage is estimated at 5,000,000 dollars. Tha British and American Consulates at Papeete were wrecked. Five hundred British subjects need relief. Several islands have disappeared.
