THE HOLIDAY.

.*- Despite the somewhat threatening weather in the early part of the day, the trams to Sumner and New Brighton yesterday were packed to overflowing, and a large number of holiday makers went to tho Port Hills. Bay was also a favourite resort for a number of picnic parties. The Band of Hope Demonstration, held in Hagley Park attracted a large attendance, as also did the cycling meeting at Lancaster Park, under the auspices of the Pioneer Bicycle Club. There was a goodly gathering at the Autumn Meeting of the C.J.C. at Riccarton, and a number took the opportunity of a quiet inspection of the pictures at the Art Exhibition. In the evening the various places of amusement were largely attended. A close holiday was observed at Lyttelton yesterday, no work being done on the wharves, while most of the shops in town were closed. A fair number of people went through to Christchurch during the day, the races at Riccarton, the sports at Lancaster Park, and other holiday attractions in the city accounting for about 600 persons book--ine from the Port. The marine excursion to Akaroa was well patronised by the Lyttelton people. Extra trains were running during the day, and about 800 persons went through to Lyttelton, where the steamers were running harbour trips. The Cygnet carried a fairly large number to Port Levy, and was well patronised on her sea trip to New Brighton. The 6teamer John Anderson made a number of trips fo Diamond Harbour and Purau, while the Purau and Canterbury were running frequent excursions to Governor's Bay. and these three steamers carried a largo number of people during the day.
