AUSTRALIAN DEFENCES. MELBOURNE, October 29. The Minister of Defence has cabled to England an order for twenty new 18$ pound breech-loading gun*. LIABILITY FOR FRAUDULENT ' CHEQUES. , The Appeal Court gave its decision, m favour of defendants in the case-of Marshall and Day against the Colonial Bank of Australia to recover moneys alleged to have been negligently paid by the, defendant bank on cheque* drawn by plaintiffs, and subsequently altered to larger amount* without the knowledge or sanction of plaintiffs. The High Court decided that the appeal must' be allowed. Judgment was entered for appellants with cost*. TASMANIA'S NEW GOVERNOR. HOBART, October 29.
