DIOCESAN STANDING COMMITTEE.

The Standing Committee met on October 11th. A report from the Hospitality Committee was received. The President (Archdeacon Harper) informed the Standing Committee that he had licensed the Rev. H. G. Baker as curate of Fhillipstown on the understanding that he should be free to take outside work to some extent. That" the Maori Mission Board of tho General Synod -would meet, at Christ's College Library at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 2nd. That the Re-vg.'F. A*. Bennett, A. F. Williams, 'J. A. O. Williams, and the Rev. C. A. Fracr, would speak at th«s missionary meetings to be hold em Wednesday, November 9th. The Bishop of New Guinea would be in Christchurch about the same time, bub with so many other meetings and the Synod, it was not possible to- find room far the special meeting he had desired to hold in behalf of his own mission. It recommended that the proposal for a central meeting in behalf of the Maori -Mission should' be' abandoned in favour of three simultaneous meetings, namely, at St. Michael's, filydenham,' and Merivale (the sub-committee has since decided to substitute St. JobWs, Christchurch, for Sydenham). A report as to the employment of deacon-students was read, and the consideration, of this report was postponed until the roext meeting of tho Standing Committee.- Final plans for a church at .cittle Akaloa were approved, and a plan for the enlargement of the infant schoolroom at Addington. It was rcrolved to recommend the Church Property Trustees to accept with -thanks an offer of T.S. 26 and 28 Glenavy (2 rootle 8 for Church purposes in the parochial district of Waihao, from the Rev. Mackenzie Gibson. On the application of the vestry, Geraldino, it was resolved to recommend the Church Property Trustees to sell to the executors of the late Hon. J. B, A. itclajid the gkbe-at Mount Peel, given some yeara since by that genfteman, and alwi thnt the Trustees should accept an. endowment for tho maintenance- and improvement 'of the Hororattt' Cemetery, offered by the Hon. Kir John HalL, Further, that • the Trustees should make a grant 0f.£250, on the usual condition, to the'cute of Leeston, to complete the purchase" of a house with outbuildings and three acres of land for the purpose of a' vicarage. A supplementary removal grant was made to the vicar' of Riccartbn, late of Cburtenay. Correspondence rein-' tive to the official expenses of the Primate/ was read, and wae referred to the Diocesan Synod. On receipt" of certain information from the Rev. T. Farley, plans for a church at Kingsdown were approved. It was resolved to recommend the Church Property Trustees to apply the insurance nioney of a cottage on the Belfast Church site, des-! troyed by fire, to the reduction of the loan for the erection of the church, subject to the consent of the church officers. .A letter from Mr J. E. March, suggesting an alteration in the regulations for churchwardens and -vestries, was held over for the next Standing Committee to consider. The draft report to Synod was adopted, and. members were appointed to bring forward in Synod its several recommendations.
