. MB ALEXANDER CARRICK. General and deep legrefc.wa* expressed yesterday vrben the news vac received-of the death of Mr Alex. Carrick, manager of tbo Christchurch branch of the National Insurance* Company. Mr Carrick was I>orn in Glasgow in 1837, and wae educated at the Glasgow High School* In 'January, 1854, he left for Melbourne in the, sailing ship Janet Nicol, which belonged to Mr\V. S., Lindsay, father'of Major Lindsay, of Timaru. For a ehort time whilst in Bendigo, Mr Carrick wus jn, on office. Returning to Melbourne he entered tb*firm of Messrs Craig; Martin'and Co.. shipping Rgonte. In 1859 lie left for punedin, where he entered into busaneeTwith the late 3lr R. B. Martin, the firm being Messrs R. B. Martin, general merchants < and wool shipper*. In 1871 Mr-Carrick came to this city to take vup the management >pt the local branch of the Victoria. Insurance Company, a position, he held" till 1873, when be joined- the National Inanranc6 Company as manager of it*, local.branch. Tliie position ho held at the' time of* hie death. For & lengthy period he was & member of the committee of the Rhodes Convalescent Home, and jn caees where 1 his help was sought privately,' he rendered arnirinnae to many*, He wae nn active member and a vice-president of the Chrietchurch Beautifying Association, and wae much interested in its work.- Mr Carrick also took T n>uch interest in tl» Acclimiwtisatkm Society, and Wae one of the first membefe of the Bowlinjr and Golf Clubs. He was much interested in the work of the different horticultural societies, and wae a nhember of tbe Chamber of Commerce. i ' , Some weeks ago Mr Carrick was attacked by lung * trouble, to which he raccumbed *t one o'clock yesterday morning. The. funeral leaves for the Linwood ennetery at 2 ; 30 o'clock to-morrow. Mn> Currick pre-deceased her husband nine years ago, on August 18th.
