The Arbitration Court to-day dismiswd the application made by. the SailuikiJttf*' Union for the enforcement of an *nrard, the President laying it down that in all Ciiies it was the duty of the Inspector of Awards to inquire into alleged breaches, and take proceedings if nece.i«arr. Reid and Gray were fined £4 and coste for employing men as labourers w]» were over twenty-one years, ihe Court considering the diifeuce had not ahown that the foreman had Uiken precaution in engaging the men. For breach of the painters' award a line of'£l was imposed, iui incompetent man having been engaged, apparently from philanthropic motives. Then came & case in which a girl was fined Sβ for a breach, of the hosiery awaxd, by leaving her employment without giving a week> notice.: For a breach of tiie carters' award McMullau was fined £2. Hβ laid ivnuTinto the town from the country, and started a coal business, a. lad he bad brought with, him doiug occasional carting with-, out receiving carter's wages, the employer not knowing- he liad to work under an av.ard made before ho commenced business.
