AN AUTUMN SHOW.

'; THE PROPOSAL EEJECTED. . At vesten&y'fl meeti"*? of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Arrsoomt ion's general committee, Mr .£•■**• SUvciev submitted a motion propping uwf an. Autumn Show he held. After, discussion th» matron, was rejected by ten votes to eight. , Mr Staveloy's motion stated— the opinion of tbk» committee it in desirable to hold an Autnran ; Show of fat stock, roots, grain, hunter-, wool,, etc., on the Show grounds during tiro months of April or May." The mover sajd he had given notice of motion at. tho previous meeting, so that the matter might not be decided too hurriedly. So far as he was aware there was no very great desire on the. part of the. community that tho Association should hold .either an 'Autumn or a Winter Show, but as members knew, they had been continually criticised und ! preached at by the newspapers in regard to their apathy in this matter.. The newspaper writers could Tint understand wiry they, the premier Association, could not. like Dunedin and Polmerpton North, hold a, successful Wihter Show. He would not take up timo tiling members the rwuwm, but there was no comparison powible between Palmersttm North and'Ota go and Christchurch. He thought that without running much monetary mk the Association would be able to hold tlie Show suggested in his motion. Ho expressed the. opinion that the Association had, perhaps, been rather weak-kneed in not carrying out the projected Winter Show some tune ago, when a, large amount had been guaranteed to cover any low. Mr C. F. Hugonin seconded the motion, and raid he drd *o because if the Association held a Show it should be held on their own grounds, not in town. l He pointed out that if the Show were held in April or May they would have good competition in the fat stock classes. He agreed with the mover that tho Show, if held, would not involve the Association m any great expense. Mr M. Murphy pointed out that the I motion did not specify which year the proposed show should be hold. He suggested that if it wan held in 1906 the electric trams would be running, whilst if it was held nest year the road would be torn up for the * tramways, and people would not be able io get to the Shqw Ground. If held in 1906 he would support tlie idea of the show; otherwise he would oppose it. Mr J. Studholme remarked that at Ashburton they had the nucleus M a good winter show. In the best interests of the farming community the two Associations should pull together to make the Ashburton Winter Show a success and a credit to Canterbury. (Laughter.) Mr H. B. Peryman suggested that the . Winter Show might be held alternately at Atihburton and Christchurch. Dr. Levingo said he had always been an advocate for a winter show, but he could not have anything to do .with tire "hybrid thing" MrStaveley proposed. He had thought they would We had.some definite Rclveme brought up, as it was a new proposal, but so far aa he could see it was the okl winter show dressed up in new garments, -le questioned whether they could geli roots during April or May. Referring to the Ashburton Winter Show, he raid the Ashburton Association had mad© a very bold start, and it would ill become the Canterbury Association to hold a show in competition with theirs, and it was not for them to try and take the winter show out of the Ashburton Association's hands.

The Canterburr Association had lost the best chance it ever had of holding a winter show—they had Met it go through, Jheir timidity and apathy—and he ,«rt«imy, thought it unbecoming for them wnr Iff start in opposition to A#hburton.j' > * Mr Studhohne pointed out thai. tW Aahburlon Association had the advantage of a Targe space in the centre of the town absolutely free. All the Ashburton A*»oelation wanted 'was *" little encouragement for a year or two. _. Mr Staveley explained that it was his intention that the show should he held nest The motion was negatived by 10 votes to 8. , v.. " ■-■ ■"!
