A MAORI TRAGEDY.

■i — MURDER AND SUICIDE IN A WHARE. (PBXSS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WANGANUI, April 25. Details of tbe tragedy up the river showthat it occurred at Pungarehu. Tiwha and his wife were sleeping in a where with another native/(Hone) and hie wife. (Hat). About three o'clock on Saturday morning the latter were aroused .by the .deceased [ couple quarrelling. Suddenly the. woman ran across the whare and threw hersell 6n the other two as they lay down. The 1 woman wae bleeding profusely from a cut in her throat. Hone jumped up and caught hold of Tiwha, who held the bloody ; ra_or in his hand. The former was thrown to the ground, and ran out for aatiitance. Aften he left Tiwha again attacked his wife, and killed her. Hat rushed to the rescue, and in tlie struggle with the murderer the latter cut her hand with the raxor and bit her finger. She theto rushed from the whare, meeting her husband and uncle. On returning to the whare they found Tiwha outside in a dying condition/ with his throat also cut. Tiwha wae | twenty-four years r .ld and hie wite nineteen. Their throats were cut almost from ear to ear. 'Hie wlj.are was covered in blood, and is described by the police as like a shambles. Jealousy was evidently the cause, the murderer not caring to ccc hia wife leave him, even holding her by the bond as they walked. ' At the inquest a verdict waa returned that tlie woman met her death at the hands of her husband while temporarily insane, and the latter committed suicide while temporarily insane.
