Tyro prosecutions for breaches of the Shop and Shop Assistants Act tiook place yesterday at Lyttelton, before Mr W. B. Haselden, S.M. Mrs Rogers, for whom Mr Dougal appeared, was charged with not closmg her shop on December 31st, in the afternoon. The Inspector of Factories (Mr Lomas) deposed that the defendant's sltop was open all day on December 31st and .January Ist and 2nd. The defendant sold fruit, confectionery, and books and periodicals. The books and periodicals were removed on December 31st. On January Ist some paper? were on the counter, and on January 2nd the book*, etc., were exposed as usual. To Mr Dougal: There were co papers or periodicals on sale on December 31st. Mr Dougal submitted that only fruit and confectionery bad been sold. Tfie Bench inflicted, a fine of 40s and costs. J. Wyatt. was charged with allowing his daughter to work, in his bakery and aerated waters factory, after hours on January let and 2nd. 'He pkaded that he wished to supply the wants of the large number of people who came to Lyttelton on those days. He was fined 20s and costs, 7s, on eacli charge. Allen Sweeney, who had been arrested by Constable P. Moore, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a pair of sea boots and a sailor's bag, containing clothing, the total value being £2, was fined 40s, with the alternative of fire weeks' hard labour. In a civil case, Gharles Mazey v Charles Thomson, £5 6s, judgment by default was given for the plaintiff for the amount claimed and costs. One old age pension was renewed in full.
