DOREY, LESTER AND CO.
TO THE EDITOB OF THB PRESS. Sir,—ln August, 1902, I received from this firm a bundle of circulars and » prospectus setting forth the merits of watches, supplied by them. Among other papers there -was a. coupon entitling mc to one gold-filled stop watch for thirteen shillings and sixpence, upon the condition that I would send to the firm the names of six friends to whom. I had shown the watch. I was only asked to do this if the article gave satisfaction. Out of curiosity, and a.s much for fun as anything vise, I sent the money, and considerably more tlian halt a dozen friends awaited with mo tb* result. Our curiosity respecting the nature of that "watch remains unsatisfied. >iy views respecting the nature of the transaction are well defined and mature. fc>ix months ago a frknd of mine received a coupon, etc., from the same firm, and passed it on to mc. I sent it to the firm, with a statement of my experience of tlwir methods. ißy return of post I received a letter stating that in reply to my' esteemed enquiry the firm did itself the honour to forward under separate'cover their new and amended catalogue. A study of this publication shows that the firm is extending the scope of its operations. The humour of their last communication to myself exhibited a refinement which lias goiw far to mitigate my sense of bereavement concerning that thirteen shilling and sixpence. One likes to be done artistically if at all. and I have come across few things more charming than the gravity -with which these gentlemen solicited a continuance of my patronage which th<»y had so much appreciated in the past. Any. one anxious to enjoy an experience identical with my own should liave no difficulty in gratifying his desire. On the other hand those grosser mortals whose antiquated ideas tend in the opposite direction will know what to do with circulars, coupons, etc., emanating from Messrs Dorey, Lester, and Co., of Winchester Avenue, Kilbum.—Yours, etc., - CHARLES LEWIS. Ealswell, January 12th, 1904.
