THE LINCOLN ROAD SEWER

AN ALLEGED NUISANCE.

It was reported to the City Council by the Sanitary Committee la&t night- that several complaints had been, received that a ventilator of the Lincoln road sewer, ncnr CJiiton street, emitted a very offensive smell, and the Committee hod requested the Drainage Board to have a ventilating shaft erected in order to abate the nuisance. Cr. Sorenseit, who moved the adoption of the report, explained that the offensive smell conld not have Arisen from the abattoir drainings for the reason that 95 per cent, of such drawings waa composed of water. Cr. llanhire said he felt very strongly on the question, for he lived in the locality, and had recently loet a. child through fever. The whole of the stuff from, the abattoir emptied into the drain, and the smell —at arose was rotten and putrid. If anyone conld convince him that the nuisance did not arise from the abattoir he would be only too pleai>ed, but at the present time the general opinion in Aldington was that the offensive matter came from the abattoirs. He waa convinced that unless something was done shortly there wouid be a terrible outbrea-k of soree infectious disease. As it was the smell was so bad that he conld not open a trir.do-w in his house nor allow a child ontside the door. *Gr. Hadfedd pointed out that until the abattoir connections were made, there had not been anything like the same cerapbintt. After further discission, the Msyor said that H the allegations -were at aM true, it was a Most- haporteufc matter, and the isßiitary Committee should try nrd ascertain whether the etencfe winpkined of came from the abattoirs or not. The report was then adopted.
