The Department of Industries and Coin* merce has received the following cable from the Assent-General, dated London, 31st ult.: —The mutton market continues dull and weak ; there is great competition between different importers of River Plato mutton. The average price to-day is— For Canterbury brands 3£d to 4d, for Dunedin. Southland and W.JLIE. Company's brands 3j}d, other North Island brands s|d, ewes 3|d, Kiver Plate 3£d Australian 3d. The lamb market is steady. The average price to-day of Canterbury brands is sd, for brands other than Canterbury 4|d to 4Jd, tegs- 4Jd. The beef market has suil'ered a further decline; the average price to-day of hind-quarters of New Zealand beef is 3|d. fores 2gd. The butter market is steady, and the demand is chiefly for the choicest sound stored. New Zealand is quoted at 102 s. Danish 120 s, Canadian IOCa, Siberian, 925, Argentine (new) 103 s, Irish 108 s. The cheese market Is quiet, tvith a tendency in favour of buyers. Canadian 54s to 55s per cwt. The hemp market is dull; the price of good fair Wellington, on spot, to-day, is £3l per ton; January to March shipments £3O 10s to £3l; Manila hemp, fair current grade, on spot, to-day, is quoted at £36, and is steady. There has been no alteration in the' cocksfoot market siuce last week. AMUERLEY. At Amberky yesterday there was an entry of 1500 sheep. Prices were:—Shorn sheep: Fat wethers 17s 9d, welhers 16s 3d to 18s 6d, fat ewes 15s 9d, four-tooth w-ethers 15s 9d : forward four-tooth wethers 17s 9d. Unshorn sheep: Fat merino ewes 14s 3d, merino wethers fSs 3d to 20s, ewes 19s 9d'to 22s 6d, hoggets 15s 8d to 18s 3d, ewes and lambs (all counted) 10s to 12s 3d. merino ewes and lambs 10s 3d, hogget? 15s 7d. At the skin sale heavy-woolled skins made up to 8s 3d.
