\ email crowd of Linwood voters were assembled round *he Borough Council oftice when.the results of the polling for the Linwood candidates were announced by the returning officer ehortly before nino o'clock- ~ Mr H. J. Pearc©. epeakung from the steps of the Council Chambers, said he thanked the electors exceedingly for the proud position they had placed turn m that evening, especially after the way he had been treated by one of the publio papera of Christchurch. The statements made were untrue as far aa he whs concerned, and the paper took a very mean advantage of him by publishing the statements the night before the election, when no opportunity of reply wae given to hini. The polling of the ratepayers was a vindication of what he had done. (Applause.) As their representative fae would do bos utmost to push the Linwood district along, while at tie same time looking after the welfare of the greater city as a whole. Mr Pearce then mentioned the high pressure Water supply, the drainage system, and fire prevention, which, he said, were questions which demanded the first attention from the council. He again thanked the ratepayera for the proud, position they had given him. (Applause.) Mr Otley, who was also received with applause, thanked the ratepayers for electing him a councillor. He considered it was a very great victory to be placed second to Mr Pearce, and above the others who had put up. Hβ was sure that Mr Pearce ana himself would do their best to see that Linwood received its fair share of support, and was looked after in the best interests of the rabenayers. (Applause.) Three cheers were th«n giv*en for the successful candidatesMr T- N. Horsley eaid he was proud that so many Linwood residents had voted for him. He referred to the friendly feeling that had existed between-' the four, candidates, and eaid he wished to be the first to congratulate Mr Pearce and Mr Otley upon their success. (Applause.) Mr Denton said he thought Mr Pearce and Mr Otley would do their veny best for the welfare of Linwood. He thankfd those electors who had voted for him, (Applause.)
