FATAL RESULT OF A RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TE_EOJUK.7 WELLINGTON, April 27. Mr W. T. L. Travers went to the railway station to see a friend off, and remained in the carriage until the train began to move. In alighting on to the station platform he knocked against a guard who was keeping bystanders from the train, and fell between the platform and the train. The train was immediately stopped, and the sufferer, who was perfectly conscious and self-possessed, was removed on a stretcher to his home, end medical assistance was summoned. It was found necessary to amputate his right leg, but Mr Travers died at six o'clock this morning, aged eighty-four. Mr Travers was very badly injured. Hi 3 nose was broken, and his leg horribly orushed. and other parts injured. Amputation of the leg was necessary, and the operation took place between midnight and one o'clock, and he died four hours later. When picked up Mr Travers, who was conscious and eelf-collected, told ■the constable that he had collided with the guard. Then he appears to have fallen back against one of the moving carriages and dropped down between the line and the platform. The crushing of the leg was probably due to jamming between some portion of the carriage and the platform, as the doctois consider that the wheel did not pass over the limb. There were probably internal injuries as well.
