FIRES.
At 9-20 o'clock on Saturday evening a seven-roomed house in Windmill road, occupied by Mr George Burt, was discovered to be on tire, and, with its contents, was totally destroyed. The firo spread to tbe adjoining building on the north side, a sixroomed house owned by Mr James Jamieton, and occupied by Mr Andrew Telford, and it was partly gutted. A bou.se on the south side (owned and occupied by Mrs Catherine Evan?) ■nas severely scorched. Tlie fire is supposed to have originated through ..spark from the kitchen stove setting fire to some linen which had been hung in front of it by Mrs Burt- before, going out, about, half-piist seven o'clock. Mr Burt'n (owned by the Lyttelton Building Society) was insured in the Royal Office for £250, and his furniture was covered in the same office for £190. Mr Jamieson's house was insured in the Victoria Office, for £200. and Mrs Evans's in the Northern for £200, and her furniture for £100 in tbo same ofiice. Mr Telford's furniture was not insured* Both thei City and Sydenham Fire Brigades turned out promptly, and prevented the fire doing greater damage. Tlie nearest, available water was at tho West Christchurch School Bath, and the Brigade laid out 2200 feet of hose, and it was necessary to pass the hose under the railway line The Sydenham chemical was stationed on the north: side of the building, and the Lichfield street on the south aide. The Deluge was stationed at the School Baths. After the brigades got to work two more alarms—one from tlie Clock Tower box and the other from the Prince of Wales box—were given, but were for the same fire. This caused some confusion, and resulted in the Chester street plant being turned ont. The public should understand) that once an alarm has been given for a fire there is no necessity to give any further alarm.
