CANTERBURY COLLEGE.

The Canterbury Co'lege Board of Governor.'! met yesterday afternoon. Present — Mr A. E* G. Rhodes (chairman), Bishop Julias, Bishop Grimes, Dean Harper, Dr. Eiwin. M«i €'. H. A. 'J. Opie, C. C. Corfe, J. C. Adams, G. W. Russell, W. H. Montgomery. T. \V. Adams, T. Hughes, and 11. J. Beswick. The College and Finance and Estates Joint Committees reported having had an interview with the Secretary for Education regarding the Government's proposals with retfpect to providing free places in High Schools. A sub-committee had been appointed to bring up a report on the matter. The College Committee recommended that Miss F. M. Parker be appointed temporary assistant teacher at the Girls' High School, to fill the vacancy caused by Misn GrejeWe leave of .absence. It was suggested that, if satisfactory, the appointment should be confirmed for the period of Miss Gresson's a-bsencp. The salary was fixed at the rate of £110 per annum. The Committee also recommended:—That the tsalary of Mr G. R. Marriner, biological laboratory assistant, be increased to £85 per annum, ob from the Ist January. That a certificated teacher of drawing for the Girls' High School, either male or female, be advertised for, at a salary at the rate of £30 per annum. Duties to commence next term (3rd June). That the Committee be authorised to arrange for filling the vacancy at the Boye' High School, during the absence on leave of Mr Laing. That the' seal of the College be affixed to the agreement between the College and Dr. Chilton, Professor of Biology. That the Committee be authorised to lay on gas and ■water pipes to the College tennis pavilion, at an approximate cost of £3 or £4. The report was adopted, with the exception of the last clause, which was referred back to the Committee.

The 'Museum and Library Committee recommended that /a vote of thanks be accorded }>lim, Dixon for eight drawings presented to the School of Art. That the sum of £5 be granted for the purchase ol books for the School of Art Library. That an extra scholarship be granted this year at the School of Art, to girls from primary Rchoole, a« two girla were equal for the sixth scholarship. The Committee reported having reappointed'Mr E. H. 0. Bidder, for the current session, ac part-time) assistant instructor in mechanical drawing at the •choel of engineering; having appointed Mr R. A. Campbell, for tht> current session, as student assistant at the school of engineering, at £40 for the session; and liaving no power to grant assistance to the West port Atheneeum, towards replacing "the library and free reading room, destroyed by fire. The report was adopted. Mr Edward Thompson's resignation of tho position of drawing and woodwork master at the Boys' High School was referred to the College Committee, with power to advertise for a successor. The following re-appointments were made:—Mr E. Lelievre to represent the Board on the Akaroa High School Board. Mr James Sinclair on that of the Waimate High School, and Mr John Johnston on the Rangiora High School Board. ' The Chairman's annual report and bal-ance-sheet were taken as read, and laid on the table. The Chairman stated thnt he had received a letter from Professor Blunt, stating that he hid been offered another appointment.
