AMERICAN COAL STRIKE.
FAMINE IN NEW YORK.
United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright. (Received October 2nd, 9.3 a.m.) NEW YORK, October 1. Coal is selling at a halfpenny per pound (£4 13s 4d per ton) in New York. Consequent on the high price of coal, manufacturing -works are running half time. A convention of Mayors has been summoned to arrange for the enforced settlement of the miners' strike in Pennsylvania. INTERVENTION BY THE PRESIDENT. A CONFERENCE ARRANGED. (Received October 2nd, 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, October 2. President Rocsevelt invited the presidents of the Anthracite Coal Companies and Mr Mitchell, president of the Miners' Union, to confer .-rrith him to-morrow with reference to the strike. He described the matter as vitally affecting the whole nation. The invitation was accepted. The State Democratic Convention's platform, adopted at Saratoga, includes national ownership of the anttbracit-e mines with jo rt compensation to the present owners.
