The -alvatdon Army Bioram* Company Eve an exhibition in the Oddfellows' Hall, Ijioai, on Thursday evening, at which there was a large attendance. The Sumner Savage Club gave a ladies' night on Thursday, in the Sumner Town Hall, which was decorated with flags and evergreens. There was a large attendance. The _awera (Morning Star) Juvenile Tent of Be__bß«- Lodge was opened in Christc__rsh this week by the officers of the adolt Teat, Bros. H. Dymond, J. Smith, H. Henwood, and R. H. Taylor were appoutted superintendents. The weekly meeting of the Lyttelton literary and Debating Society was held oa -TramUy. The Rev. J. McKenzie delivered an interesting lecture on the life and works of Thomas Carlyle, and received a cordial vote of thanks. There vraa a good attendance at the meeting of the Sumner Musical and Literary Barieiy on Wednesday evening. It was a "children's night>" tha programme consistfog of action songs, solos, and choruses, and recit-tians by children. Miss Cooper acted at _(»o_ip_iirt. The Rev. Jones announced that the "Sumner Journal," to which both -dolts and juvenile, were requested to contribute, would b» ready to put before the Society at its next meeting.
