THE ARCHBISHOP OF YORK.

The Archbishop of York, the Most Rev. William Dalryuiple Maclagan, D.D.. who p'.aces the Crown on the head of the QueenConsort, has been a soldier. He is the son of an Army surgeon, and was born and educated at Edinburgh, and then joined the Army and served for five years in India, leaving with the rank of lieutenant in 1852. Returning to England he adopted the Churcii as lus profession.* and entered at Peterhouse College, Cambridge, graduated in 1856. and was ordained priest by Archbishop Tait. then Bishop of London. After serving several curacies, he was promoted to the vicarage of St. Mary Abbotts. Kensington, where he remained till 1878. when he was nominated by Crown to the Bishopric of Lichfield, which had become vacant by the death of Dr. Selwvn. In 1891 he was translated to York. He is now 76 years of age. THE MISTRESS OF THE ROBES. The Mistress of the Robes is the Duchess of Buccleuch, whose husband, the Duke of Buccleuch, is Captain-General of the Royal Company of Archers—the King's bodyguard in Scotland —who follows the RovaT. coach in the Coronation procession. She is the Queen's closest attendant throughout the ceremony. To the Mistress of the Robes will belong, once the ceremony is concluded, the splendid purple velvet robes which from the most important portion of the costume of the Queen.
