A MARINE CONFERENCE.
(from a correspondent.) WELLINGTON, May 19. Within the last day or two a Conference has been held here between Mr James Mills, managing director of tlie Union Steam Ship Company, Mr W. P. Kennedy, Local manager, and Captain Strang, marine superintendent, on the one hand, and four delegates from the New Zealand Meroantile" Marine Officers' Association on the other, relative to matters affecting their interests especially hours and rates of pay. The resut of the Conference, has, of course, net been divulged, as the other shipping companies trading in and to the colony have yet to be consulted. I understand, however, that the marina officers are very well satisfied with tha concessions which the. Union (Company js willing to make, amounting, it is said _- about 90 per cent, of the demand. ' If the other companies do not fall into line it is not unlikely that the machinery of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act will be moved. The Officers' Association is _, growing body, and numbers at the present time some 250 • members. . ' ." " May 20. ' The four days' confe-ence between representatives' of the Union Company -and the Marine Officers'". Association conciluded yesterday, and has resulted _v the settlement of grievances, whioh the intention of the Association to take to the Arbitration Court.
