THE TAILORESSES' DISPUTE
The following are fuller detail* «f the award of the Arbitration Court in the taflorecees , disputes: — The award fixes the following scale of wagee:— •■; CoaA makers, first-class hands, per week, 255; second-class, 20s 4 third-class, 17* 6d; other haods, 16s. A firrt-class coat maker i* defined a* one who has served her time and who can make per -week fifteen stock fiwt-ckee sacs, lined, fire pocket*, padded shoulders, flaps, or waits. A wcond-class coat maker must hare served her time and be able to make twelve euoh eaes a week, and a third-class coat maker must be capable of making ten each me*, r.nd have served Ber time. Vest-makers — Fint-claee vest-makers, 255; second-daes, 20s; third-class, 17s 6d. A first-class vest-maker must be able io make 35 stock 8.8. vests, a second-class hand 27, and a third-claes hand 23. Other vest-makers shall be paid 12s 6d a week for the first four months after the expiration of their apprenticeship, and 15s thereafter until they qualify as third-class hands. Troiwers-makera and Finishers —Firstclass hands, 255; second-class, 20s; thirdclass, 15s; other bunds, 12s 6d. A firstclass hand shall be rated as such by agreement between herself and employer. A second-class hand shall be one who has Served her time and afterwards worked, either continuously or in intervals, at tailoring for six calendar months. A third-clans hand must huve served her time and worked at tailoring for three calendar months. Apprentices rfiall be employed ac follows :-—Coat-making, one apprentice to three operatives: other departments, one ' apprentice to four operatives. Terms riiall be, coat-making, two years; vert-making, one year; trousers-making, one year; trouscrs-fininhing, one year; coat-making, j two year*; vest-making* one year; trousersiwakinp, one year. Apprentices shall b? paid as follows:—Goat-making and coat-| machining, fiist six months, ss; second six i months, 7s 6d: third s:x month*, 10s; fourth six months, 12s 6d. Vest-making and vest-machining, first four months. s*; second four month*. 7s 6d: third four 10*. Tronsers-making, trouser*maohining, tjwusere-fiiushinjr. and mole machining, first four months, ss: recond four month*. 7s 6d: third four months, 10s. These provisions will apply to all apprentices whose term* of apprenticeship shall, at the coming into operation oi tii* award, be unexpired, as well as those hereafter apprenticed. Unionists shall have preference of employment. The award comes into force on the 2nd of June, 1902.
