HEAVY WEATHER IN THE NORTH.
(PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAMS.) AUCKLAND, April 8. A gale .of most unusual violence was raging aG Tauranga this morning, with deluges of rain. At high water a tremendous sea was running in the harbour. The waves broke right on the Strand roadway, doing much damage to the breastwork. Several boats dragged! their moorings, or broke away : and were swamped. The force of the "gale broke the windows in soma shops on the Strand, and a good number of trees were uprooted or broken. PALMERSTON NORTH, April 8. Captain Edwin's prediction of heavy rain was abandactiv verified to-night. Bain set in at 5 o'clock, and has continued vp to the present (10.50 p.m.) without intermission, the showers being particularly heavy. Rain has been falling in the interior for the past two days, and the rivers are reported- to be rising. Th 9 downfall will prove of enormous benefit to the farming community after the long period of dry weather.
