WORST FEARS CONFIRMED.
MELBOURNE, April 8.
Private letters received from 'Lieutenant Witton since hie imprisonment confirm the worst fears in regard to the murders of the Boers. Witton says that Captain Hunt was killed on August 7t»h, and not in September. This seems to confirm the charge against Captain Hunt that he ordered his subordinates not to take any Boer prisoners.
FURTHER SHOCKING ALLEGATIONS.
A CARBINEER'S STORY.
REFORTED WHOLESALE MURDER;
(Received April 9th, 12.10 a.m.)
LONDON, April 8. A Liverpool man, formerly a member of the Bushveldt Carbineers, declares tihat Morant shot and killed Van Buren on th© open veldt .while speaking to him about the murders. He then reported that Van Buren had been gallantly killed in action. The officers and. men of the Carbineere represented every nationality. The missionary Heese started a report about the eight Speloken murders, and was ehot. The murders totalled; between thirty and forty. In some instances,the motive was robbery," others were committed out of sheer recklessness through, drink. Neither officers nor men were ever short of whiskey.
