THE WORLD'S GREAT PHRASES.
The International Peace Society of Milan have lately issued a remarkably interesting illustrated abnanao for 1902, in which several pages are devoted to the world' 3 great phrases—phrases which have become the common property of all nations—in all, 172. To these 172 great phrases .England has made the paltry contribution of five! From these five one ought strictly to be deducted, for the phrase,"God and LiE&rtv" is due to Voltaire, wno uttered it when giving •his benediction to. Franklin's nephew. The other four are as follows: —"A horse! a horse! my kingdom for a horse!" ("Richard H1.," , Act V., cc. 4); "Britons never shall be slaves"; "England) expects every man will do his duty"; and Gladjrtone's words about the Bourbon Government, "This is the negation of God erected into a system of government."
