A boarder was awakened, and seeing a light in his room, aroused a fellow boarder. On going outride they saw a man quietly crawl- ! ing upstairs. The intruder, finding himself pursued, ■ bolted into <*the . bathroom, evidently realising that, his only chance to escape was to toy and get past his'interceptors. • As he came out of the bathroom one of the boarders struck him on the head with a club, and after a struggle he wae overpowered; and his hands tied with. rope. On the police arriving, the man waa'-found to be unconscious from the blow, wJuci. grazed his skin. He soon recovered, and on being removed to the police station he was found to have on him a discharge at Wellington from tile Upolu, from which it appears bis name is Walter Goodman. HLs age is given as 60, and his native placeas Liverpool. The items found on him included a gold watch and chain, nuggets of gold, four sovereigns, and. a sum of silver. , None of this was secured from, the boardinghoiise, but it ie probably that it represents tba proceeds of a previous burglary.
