ALLEGED FORGERY.

At Rangiora, before Messm Good and Jennings, J.P.s, John Sharp, after hearing evidence, admitted •&■ charge of forging a cheque for £4 on Union Bank property a cheque for £4: on the Union Bank, purporting to be signed by J. B. Boy<i for Boyd and Keir. The cheque had been seen in

his possession, but had not been uttered and was demanded from him by the police* The accused was committed fop triaw. ILL-TREATING COWS, At Rangiora yesterday, in an action brought by D. Gorrie (Mr Johnston) against T. Bolton (Mr Papprill), claim £1715 (£2 Hβ for fencing, anct £15 for stabbing fifteen cows with a pitchfork), plaintiff stated that the injuries were more or less severe, one animal being damaged to the'extent of £3 in value, and others 30s and 15s, but the average was 20s per head. Witnesses corroborated the etatement in general terms. Defendant stated the injuries could have been done by the cows horning one another. Although he had been convicted for prodding and wounding the cows, it was because he had <no witnesses on Hy side, and he denied the act. Judgment was given for damage at the rate of 10* per head, £3 loss of milk, and for the fencing, total £12 11s, with costs. WATER SUPPLY CASES. The Waimakariri-Ashley Water Supply Board (Mr Fisher) sued J. Moderate for £1 2s rates, at Rangiora yesterday. Defendant's plea was that the races'were no use to him. Judgment for plaintiff. Same v. F. Busch (Mr Johnston), for two years' rates, £14 3s 10d. Here the defence was that the classification of defendant's land, which, it was maintained, was watered hj natural springs, exempted him from the full rate. The plaintiffs case was that the classification lijst was dealt with in the valuation, and the-latter list being duly in and defendant not objecting, he could not now claim relief. It was also stated forty or fifty acres of his land had to deEend on the water-race, and that the Board ad not claimed some of the past rates, also offered to remit two-thirds of the present claim. The Justices held they could not go behind the valuation list, which was evidence of the rate,* and must give, judgment for the Board for the full amount and costs. ASSAULT, At Rangiora yesterday, G. H. Burton (Mr _ Oresswell) was fined, 4Qs and coste -£2 16s Bd, for assaulting, J. Q-. McDonald ,bj , kicking him in the face.
