THE PRICK OF BREAD.
TO THE F.DITOr. OF THK PRESS. Sir,—l <h> not think I ever read anything to iit'i-fotchsd and unit wimble as what Mr Hnud is np:'r;ed to bifve said in cou-l'-retKc. viz.. "'<! «ojkina-ii with live children i.'-ul'l i!"- ;*t the ?.mvnt time give tht-m >utli-.i*-r.t ic.-id fi.: jiieir re.juircuit'iits.'' b'.'a!ise, ffii-jooth. th' biead is 6d h loaf. He tk-f> not s;te. ;ty the It is not, really tlwt. A wo'ikman with children would send Uiviti io any taker's place and get it for ftd, though lioav the baker lives on that i> another matter—like the old woman who \<j*l ou w H ;uit she sold, ::aid it \va> the quantity sold that kept her. I have often known bivad to ba at 6d, and it has 7d. thou-h men's wages were nothing like so high as now. Why, I think any working man or everyone with tive children, must feel grossly insulted at such a statement.
Were there no flour trust, with wheat at present price, the flour must have gone up. and, of course, bread must- also. For tlte , good of the whote country, bread ougat never to be less than 6d, and to sell at sd, the old price, when flour was two pounds a ton less even from the shop or bakehouse, is a great mistake, for there is the s>aine expense for delivering all the time, and only half the people coming for tbei; bwad. I must confess I do not like the trust in some ways, yet m> far they have done nothing duJionourable that I know of.
That conference woulrt take much more answerinz, but 1 have said! enough. One cannot lfnd brains for everyone, but I do love justice and truth, with common sense; of all which that special conference seems quite devoid.—lours, etc., C.C.F.
