THE TENTH CONTINGENT,

SOUTH ISLAND BATTALION.

CAMP NOTES

The morning state yesterday was:—Permar.snt camp staff, 8." Tenth Contingent: Regimental staff, 2 officers. X squadron, 1 officer, 125 men: F Squadron, 2 officers, 121 men; Cr. Squadron, 1 officer, 105 men; H Squadron, 1 officer, 127 men ; total, 7 officers, and 478 men. Details for Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth Contingents, 42; Coronation Contingent 3. Total in camp, 530. The Officer Commanding the District Lieut.-Colonel Webb, inspected the men at eleven o'clock yesterday, and appeared satisfied with the way * they were shaping. After the inspection parade the men were drilled in troops by their troop kaders, and afterwards were put through squadron drill under the squadron officers. The men were further exercised in dismounted work in the afternoon under their squadron and troop leaders.

A supply of .303 rifles and ammunition has been received, and thirty rifles will be issued. The shooting; practice commences this morning .at th« Cashmere range, permission to use which has been kindly granted by Mr Hugonin, ths manager of the Cashmere estate. Thirty-five men. leave camp at 7.30 for the range, under Sergeaut-Maje-r Oolemaoi, 'and a second detacmnettt of tliarty men leave at 11 o'clock. Sergeant-Major Ooleman gave instruction in musketry to twenty non-commissioned officers last niglrf. One man was dismissed from camp yesterday morning for misconduct.

The probable date of the departure of the South Island Battalion is stated to be Saturday, April 19th. ~ •; Steps are being taken to form a brass band in connection with the battalion.

At present there are 98 horses in camp. Lieutenant Jones, of the Tenth Contin: gent, left Dunedin for Addingtwi by the prers yesterday morning. LJautenants Corfe and Hill have reported themselves at camp.

Amongst visitors to the camp an Sunday were Captain Harper, of the College Rifles, amd Mr G. W. Eussell, M.H.R. Yestarday tho Hon. C. C. Bowen visited tka camp. A telegram from Auckland states that Lieutenant A. J. Glasson, of the Pukekohe Mounted Rifles, has been appointed Lieutenant in the Southern Battalion of the Tenth Contingent . The SSayor has convened a meeting of citizens on Thursday, at 8 p.m., to consider the best method of giving a eend-off to the Tenth Contingent. The 'meeting will be held in tihe C% Council Chambers, and iin response to a very widespread desire,: his Worship has convened the meeting for the evening.
