A deputation from the Waikari Committee ■waited on the Board with regard to obtaining additional area for playground purposes.. It was decided that tne Koard contribute .£IOO towards die purchase of five acres in the vicinity of the ischooi, provided the committee find the remaining funds; the fire acres, if purchased, to be the property of the Boaxd.

The Buildings Committee reported: — That the application from. Kaiapoi for rifles for the cadet corps be forwarded to the Department. That the Greenstreet Committee Dβ informed that it could not purchase clubs out of its incidental funds. That the Gierk of Works report on the necessity for renewing the backs of fifteen fireplaces at the Sydenham scho&L That the Gierk of Works repair the furniture not too badly damaged by the earthquake at Spotswood, and the Beard supply nar furniture where necessary. That the question of the erection of a school at Puhipuni, Hapuka. remain in abeyance at present owing to the difficulty of fixing on a site. That in the present state of the Board's finances the Highbank Committee's request for an addition to the school cannot be acceded to. That the Board proceed with the erection of the school at Horsley Downs. That the walls of the Kaiapoi school bs cemented. That the following tenders be accepted:—Normal school, G. A.' Mazey, painting and distempering, £560; Medbury and Hurnnoi schools. Bate and Hoskins, repairing and painting buildings, £?2 and £34 respectively. That the tender of Mr McColi to provide one thousand loads of soil €or filling up the Addington school ground, at 6d per load, be accepted. The report was adopted. The Appointments Committee reported: —That iii&s Aitken, who asked for a bicycle or a grant of money to enable her to live at Leeston, had been informed that ths Board ■was unable to dfcpartj.irom the scale which provided a small addition for those obliged to live away from home. That the Board communicate with the Department regarding the compensation grant to Miss Harvey, Haiuner That the Board could not be recommended to allow Miss Harrison, St. Albans school, to be exempted from the fourth year examination, and permitted to enter the Normal school That the proposal of the Woolston Committea to appoint a pupil teacher instead of an extra assistant be referred to the headmaster. That -May Seaiey, of Ashburton, Jane Cardwell and Grace Isherwood, of Richmond, and Frederick Warner, Waltham, sit for the third year pupil teacher examination, they having already passed the matriculation examination. That the Board propose the addition of £25 per annnr» to the salary of the headmaster of the Akiroa High, School, the remainder of allowances made by the Department to be paid to Mr Gray, with a notification to each of tie two teachers that the whole question of salaries must be regarded as tentative and subject to revision from the Ist January." The Normal School Committee reported: —That the Department had intimated that the Opawa Committee'a request for a grant towards the cost of a swimming bath could not be acceded to. That" the Minister had recognised the continuation class at Greendale. That Messrs F. J. Rowley and Gates ■be recognised as instructors in woodwork. That the Board make an advance of one half of the capitation each technical class was expected to earn for the purpose of procuring material. The report was agreed to. Mr C. E. Bevan Brown wrote, asking that the entries of five candidates for the Gammack Scholarships be admitted, and explaining the circumstances under which the applications were sent in after the advertised time. It was decided to reply that the Board found it impossible to accede to the request. The Department intimated that the Government will not take any action at present in the matter of the Christchuroh West Committee's application that the December quarter's capitation be based on the previous quarter's attendance. The letter was received.

The Government Life Insurance Department, wrote, drawing attention. to the Board s liability under the Workers' Compensation for Accidents Act, and offering to insure the Board. The matter was referred to the Buildings Committee.

The School Committee's Association wroteJ—(l) supporting the proposed appointment of swimming instructors, (2) protesting against the proposed disposal of the South Beit school, and (3) enquiring what steps had been taken towards establishing technical classes or schools under the Manual and Technical Instruction Act.

Several motions were proposed with respect to the latter subject, amongst them being one by the Chairman, that the Board intended to use the South Belt school for a technical school, or sell the site for the purpose of obtaining funds for the purchase of a site, but all were negatived. It waa decided to receive the letter. . :

It was decided to apply to the Department for a grant for a new school at Hekeao, and to defer, until a reply wae received, the application for . additions to the Mayfield school and echoolhouse. After dealing in Committee with the supplementary reports from the" Appointment and Building Committees, the Board adjourned.
