WEULDJGTON, December ia Lord Roberta has cabled the Premier congratulating New Zealand on the further proof of its loyalty to the Mother Country, and tihe army "in bouth Africa, on being reinforced by an Eighth Contingent of New Zealanders. LOCAL NOTES. Enrolling for the Eighth Contingent in this cdty proceeded very vigorously yesterday, and it is estimated that already more than ihs nranber which, is to be raised in Christoh-nrch has been obtained. A number of those applying have evidently not read the conditions upon which applications for inclusion in the Contingent will be accepted. Instead of forwarding the particulars wanted, they have simply sent their names, consequently they will stand no chance of being selected, unless they immediately forward the additional information. The recruiting office here will be open at 10.30 this morning. Mr J. Thornton Wilson, tie well known footballer and athlete, who w*nt as a trooper with the First Contingent through the whole of their campaign, has applied for a commission in the Eighth Contingent. Lieutenant-Colonel Slater, Captain Hobday, and Ih , . Symes have been appointed members of the Recruiting Board at tlje Christchureh Tecrniting centre. Lieutenant Bethell, Amuri Mounted Rifles, has. been appointed recruiting officer at Gulverd«n; Lieutenant D. McMillan, Malvern Mounted Rifles, recruiting officer at Sheffield; and Captain D'Auvergne at Rangiora. The Recruiting Board' meets sot later than the 24tih inst. for the purpose of selection and medical examination.

Arrangements are being made for instructors and camp officers. The camp will be at the Agricultural and Pastoral Association's Show Grounds at Addington.

A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that the North Island battalion of the Eighth Contingent go into camp training at Trentham, near the Hut*, and tihe South Island battalion at Addington.
