a man With a backbone WANTED.
MELBOURNE, December 18. __jr McCullooh, the Victorian Minister for Defence, who first -suggested responding to German sneers by sending more troops, in another letter to the Press, expresses sad disappointment that nothing has been done in regard to his proposal to send a further contingent. He -tinderstands that certain of Mr Barton's followers are not favourable, and asfa*:—"ls this tho reason for the Commonwealth holding back, when Canada and New Zealand come to the fore?" Ho wishes they had some one at the head of the Commonwealth with sufficient backbone to rise to the occassion. Had there been no federation, he was certain the colonies, long era this, would have sent contingents. He had been inundated with letters from men desirous of volunteering. ■
