■■ The earthquake of the 16th inst. waa felt on the Midland railway works, between Patterson's Creek and Broken River, but no damage to the works is At the time of the shook. the men were working M tha tunnels,-'but though they felt the 'quake; there was no material dislodged! by it. An adjourned public meeting was held on Monday at the Kaiapoi Council Chain-" ber, the Mayor (Mr J. Daly) presiding. It; was decided that tihe Mayor and the Town Clerk should canvass for subscriptions to the Cheviot relief fund; also that on open-air service be held in the Domain next Sunday, and an appeal made for the same object.. His Worship the Mayor has received a cheque for £22 Os 9d, from the Dix Gaiety Company, proceeds of the benefit entertainment given in aid of the Cheviot Relief Fund. 7. / -, . • A _list for subscriptions towards the Cheviot Relief Fund is now on the counter at the City- Council Chamber. The Christchurch Trajnway Company sent a special tram to Papanui on the occasion of the first lot of refugees coming down from Cheviot. They also frank free any coming from Cheviot getting out at Papanui.. Before s-arting his stock sales, Mr W. Buss, at Rangiora, made an eloquent ap-
peal on behalf of the Cheviot settlers. Hef said that disaster had come suddenly to many pretty and bright homes on that estate, and though the owners might be too independent to beg for assistance, it was the duty of more prosperous neighbours, who had escaped injury, to volunteer aid. There was no need to do this obtrusively, but from a generous and natural impulse,; almost instinctive to the men he was addressing. Messrs Buddo, ML'BLR.; Home, and othew then went round with collecting lists. "The members of the Relief Committee trust," states Mr Robinson, "that subscribers to the fund will approve of the action they are taking. There are very few case's (all of which they are dealing with on their merits)' of those in need of pressing necessities of food or clothing, out there are several poor people who wSI" be unable to restore their homes without substantial aid." Mr Robinson further notifies that: —'"Applications for relief from sufferers in need of assistance from the fund must be sent in to the Chairman of the Cheviot Relief Committee by noon of Saturday, 30th November next • Applicants are to state in writing particulars of the damage sustained and the amount of assistance required. At a meeting held at Ashburton on Monday evening, Mr H. Large presiding, it was decided to hold a muff cricket match in the Domain on Thursday afternoon in aid of the Cheviot Relief Fund. Messrs Large, Taylor, Reid, Pritob&rd, and Captain Barber, of the Fire Brigade, were appointed a committee to arrange details. The Concert Committee, in connection -with the Cheviot ReMef Fund, have been able to arrange an attractive programme for the concert at the Canterbury HaH on Monday next. Amongst those contributing items will be tMrs Burns, Mrs Wilson, Misses Maud Graham, Alice Gray, Daisy Samuels, Morsden, . Edgar (2), Messrs Dykes, MS&ur, Bowrimg, 0. Read, C. . Edgar, Oolfter, F. CoKns, D. Ryan, and Bright Hours Children. Mrs Edgar and Mass Katie Young will act as accompanists. Messrs Milner and Thompson have kindly offered the use of a piano free of dharge. .
