i TO THE EDITOR OF THE PEESS. ■ J Sir, —I see. by the last 'Frisco mail in the "Daily Telegraph" of September Uih', - is published Lord Roberta's .despatch- of September 4tbJ to the Secretary of State for War, giving the names of those officers and men who, he says, during the war "have rendered special and meritorious* ser- , vice.". The list of names Lord Roberts . says is not long "when one takes into t consideration the numbers engaged (some , 250,000),* and the length of.time covered, by the operations." | Among tlce'names given in the Ist .Yorkshire Regiment is that of "Second Lieu- ' tenant A. C. Neave {deceased)" which is doubly noticeable the Tew deceased j officers' names mentioned, and the small ' proportion of. second lieutenants in the list. This young officer ,went to- South Africa a lieutenant in our Ist "Sew' Zealand Contingent, and. after being transferred to the Ist Yorkshires, was killed in" action leading his company :at Paardeburg."— Yours, etc., ■\ OLD COLONIST, j
